Overview

So Many Tears is one of the defining recordings from 2Pac's third studio album Me Against the World. Built around a memorable sample of Stevie Wonder's That Girl, the song explores mortality, paranoia, depression and the emotional pressures that accompanied Tupac's rise to fame. It is widely regarded as one of the finest performances of his career.

For the Live Squad archive, the track is particularly significant because of Stretch's involvement. He is credited as a co-writer, co-producer as part of the D-Flizno Production Squad, and performs background vocals alongside members of Thug Life and Digital Underground. Although the commercially released version features only Tupac's lead vocals, an earlier studio version was recorded featuring a full guest verse by Stretch before the song was reworked for Me Against the World.

The original version featuring Stretch survives among collectors and provides a fascinating insight into the song's development. That recording is documented separately within the Live Squad archive.
