Overview
Life's So Hard (Original Version) is an unreleased recording by 2Pac, produced by Stretch during the transitional period between late 1993 and early 1994. The song is widely regarded by collectors as one of the strongest collaborations between the two artists and remains one of the most sought-after recordings from 2Pac's unreleased catalogue.
Built around a soulful and atmospheric production, the song sees 2Pac reflect on the pressures of poverty, violence and trying to survive while remaining true to himself. His emotional performance is perfectly matched by Stretch's melancholic production, creating one of the most introspective recordings from their partnership.
Although the original version was never officially released, its lyrics were later reused for the soundtrack version of Life's So Hard, which featured an entirely new production.
Recording History
The original version of Life's So Hard is believed to have been recorded during December 1993 or January 1994 while 2Pac and Stretch were working together extensively on new material. The recording showcases Stretch's distinctive production style, combining warm melodic samples with hard drums to create a reflective backdrop for 2Pac's lyrics.
The song remained unreleased throughout 2Pac's lifetime. Collector research has long suggested that the original production incorporated elements from Led Zeppelin's Ten Years Gone, although this has never been officially confirmed. Whether sample clearance issues contributed to the song remaining unreleased has never been publicly documented.
Following 2Pac's death, the original vocals were reused for the Gang Related soundtrack, where they were paired with an entirely new production. As a result, Stretch's original version has never received an official commercial release and survives only through collector circulation.
