Overview

Hurts The Most is an unreleased collaboration between 2Pac, Stretch and Mopreme, recorded during the final period of the Thug Life era. Produced by Stretch, the song is regarded by many collectors as one of the strongest unreleased recordings from the partnership between Tupac and Live Squad.

Unlike many of the harder-edged Thug Life recordings, Hurts The Most focuses on grief, friendship and the emotional consequences of losing people to violence. Stretch opens the song with one of the most personal verses of his career before Tupac and Mopreme continue the theme, reflecting on loss, revenge and the lasting impact of street life.

Although never officially released, the recording circulated privately among collectors for many years before becoming more widely known online. Today it is considered one of the most significant unreleased collaborations between Tupac and Stretch and offers a glimpse of the material being created following the release of Thug Life: Volume 1.

Recording History

The exact recording date has never been officially confirmed, although the song is generally believed to originate from 1994 following the release of Thug Life: Volume 1. The recording has often been associated with the unreleased material intended for a second Thug Life project, although no official track listing has ever been published.

Stretch handled the production and also performs the opening verse. His performance establishes the emotional tone of the recording, making Hurts The Most one of the most personal collaborations between the three artists.

Stretch's production incorporates a vocal sample from The Streetz R Deathrow, repeating the line "Boom boom boom, got me shooting at a ghost." The sample links the recording to another of Stretch's productions from the same era and adds to the haunting atmosphere of the song.

Despite remaining unreleased, the song survives in excellent audio quality and has become one of the best known unreleased recordings among collectors of Tupac and Live Squad material.

Lyrics

(Stretch)

Woke up one morning and I'm feeling good
Misunderstood, I'm the fucking kingpin in my neighbourhood
I'm getting money with my niggas
The young guns, time to bust, pull their fucking triggas
It figures, the phone rang, I'ma bring some bad news
Tellin' from the tone of his voice my nigga had the blues
Sayin', "Such and such..."
Call it what you want,
Shots in his body was discovered by the cops.
The phone dropped, my brain locked in shock
Started smoking mad weed but the pain wouldnt stop
My nigga, they took my nigga, na fuck that
We going on a hunt and when i find him im a buck that
Fool till he drool and he croak
I’m runnin on his block nigga watch the glock smoke
Provoke the hit shit i want my vengeance
Then I skid off and get away with my intelligence
And then back around the way its so cold for you
Uh, gunshots to my fallen crew

Chorus:

When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”
When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”
When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”
When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”

(2Pac)

Revenge is sweet
On the streets, understand me
Gotta retaliate get it straight, locate the niggaz family
And im rollin in my jeep top speed, ready to pull the trigger,
On any bitch ass nigga, who got weak
They killed my homie and I’m restless
Gotta get em back
A nigga with a mak and a deathwish
Tears in my eyes dont cry
Look up to the sky and wonder why
Do everybody gotta die
Another soulja in a casket
Cant eat, cant sleep, till i, bury them bastards
His family is fallin to pieces, his momma dont understand the madness
I cant explain the drama
And it hurts the most, when its someone close
I smoke weed, cause I’m losin hope,
Any dope can see, the ghettos fulla drug dealers
But ain’t nobody born a killa
but it hurts the most.

Chorus

When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”
When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”
When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”
When your nigga dies it hurts the most
“Boom boom boom got me shootin at a ghost.”

(Mopreme)

One man, drowning in the quick sand
Put my nigga down with my foolproof plan
On the other avenues that we tried was blocked
So its time to put in work with the 10 milly plot
And in no time flat, had the fucking money sack
I'ma guard it all,
A hundred G's in my arms.
Who took the most risk, even though I was a little bigger
I thought it would be alright
Just bust another right
And get ghost down the turnpike.
But a fucking pig cut him off
My nigga won’t soft, he let his 9 off
And that will be the only way I’ll take it
Filled him full of lead and I’m raising his babies
Now the money don’t come close
Cuz when a friend dies it hurts the most
Me live the thug life
