Overview
Hellrazor (Original Version) is the earliest officially released version of the song, appearing on the 1993 Keep Ya Head Up EP issued by Interscope Records. Although often overshadowed by the 1997 remix released on Hellrazor, the original recording preserves Stretch's production and reflects the darker sound that characterised many of 2Pac's recordings during the Thug Life era.
Built around a hard, atmospheric beat, the song explores survival, determination and the struggles of growing up surrounded by violence. 2Pac's intense performance, combined with Stretch's understated production, has made the original version a favourite among collectors who generally regard it as superior to the later posthumous remix.
Unlike the 1997 release, the original recording remained largely untouched, making it one of the best surviving examples of Stretch's production work with 2Pac during 1993.
Recording History
Hellrazor was recorded during 1993 as 2Pac and Stretch were working closely together throughout the early Thug Life period. The song was selected for inclusion on the Keep Ya Head Up EP, giving it an official release on cassette and CD several years before the better-known remix appeared on R U Still Down? (Remember Me). :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Although the original recording received only limited exposure through the EP, it circulated widely among collectors and became recognised for its raw production and uncompromising lyrics. The original mix lacks the additional instrumentation and vocal changes introduced on the 1997 version, allowing Stretch's production to remain the focal point.
In 1997 the song was remixed for Hellrazor on R U Still Down? (Remember Me). While retaining 2Pac's original vocal performance, the released version featured a substantially different musical arrangement, resulting in two distinctly different recordings.
