Overview

Da Getaway is one of the original recordings from Live Squad's cancelled Game Of Survival album. Recorded during the group's time with Tommy Boy Records in the early 1990s, the song remained unreleased for almost a decade before receiving its first official release on the reconstructed Game Of Survival album in 2001.

The title reflects one of the recurring themes found throughout Live Squad's early catalogue, with vivid street narratives and cinematic storytelling. Stretch and Majesty deliver energetic performances over a hard-hitting production, demonstrating the chemistry that made Live Squad one of the most underrated groups of the era.

The complete unedited version of Da Getaway also features a full verse from K-Low, making it the only currently known recording on which he performs as an emcee. Although K-Low is best known as a producer and member of Live Squad, his appearance on the uncut version provides a rare opportunity to hear him behind the microphone alongside Stretch, Majesty and 2Pac.

Although officially released in 2001, Da Getaway remains an authentic recording from Live Squad's original Tommy Boy sessions and captures the group's sound before their later collaborations with 2Pac and the darker direction their music would take during the mid-1990s.

Recording History

Da Getaway was recorded during the original Game Of Survival sessions between 1990 and 1991 while Live Squad were signed to Tommy Boy Records. The recording was intended for the group's debut album, which was ultimately cancelled before its planned commercial release.

Like many other recordings from the sessions, the song remained in the vault after Tommy Boy abandoned the project. Following Stretch's death in 1995, Majesty later reconstructed the album through Grand Imperial Records, allowing Da Getaway to finally receive its first official release in 2001.

For many years only edited versions of Da Getaway were widely known among collectors. The discovery of the complete uncut recording revealed a previously unheard verse by K-Low that had been omitted from circulating copies. His appearance is particularly significant as it currently represents the only known recording featuring K-Low performing a complete rap verse, highlighting another aspect of his contribution to Live Squad beyond his work as a producer.

The recording remains an important document of Live Squad's earliest creative period, preserving the original Tommy Boy performances and production that might otherwise have remained unheard.
