Overview
Thug 4 Life was released on R U Still Down? (Remember Me), the second posthumous studio album by 2Pac. The song is a heavily reworked version of an earlier unreleased recording, featuring new production by Johnny "J" and We Got Kidz Productions while retaining Tupac's original lead vocal performance.
The lyrics reflect the philosophy of the Thug Life movement, focusing on loyalty, determination and remaining true to those closest to you despite the hardships of street life. Although the overall message remains unchanged, the 1997 version differs considerably from the original recording through its new production and revised arrangement.
For the Live Squad archive, the song is notable because Randy Walker (Stretch) retains an official songwriting credit despite his vocal performances being removed from the commercially released version. The original recording, which featured two complete Stretch verses, is documented separately within this archive as Thug 4 Life (Original Version).
Recording History
The original recording dates from Tupac's Interscope years and featured guest performances by Stretch. Following Tupac's death, the song was selected for inclusion on R U Still Down? (Remember Me) and extensively rebuilt using new production by Johnny "J" and We Got Kidz Productions.
During the reconstruction process, Stretch's two guest verses were removed, leaving only Tupac's vocals for the final commercial release. Although his performance no longer appears on the finished recording, Stretch retained an official songwriting credit, acknowledging his contribution to the original composition.
The resulting version presents a smoother, more polished sound than the original recording while preserving the central themes of loyalty and commitment to the Thug Life philosophy.
