Overview
Pain is one of the best known collaborations between 2Pac and Stretch. Produced by Stretch, the track was recorded during the Above the Rim sessions and captures the pair at the height of their creative partnership. Although never issued as a standalone commercial single, it became one of the most sought after recordings from the soundtrack era.
The song first appeared as a bonus track on certain editions of the Above the Rim soundtrack before receiving a wider release as the B-side to Warren G and Nate Dogg's hit single Regulate. For many fans, particularly outside the United States, the Regulate CD single was the first opportunity to own the track on CD.
Stretch contributes both the production and a guest verse, while Tupac delivers one of his most passionate performances. The song has become a favourite among collectors and is widely regarded as one of the strongest recordings from the early years of Tupac and Stretch's friendship.
An alternate version of Pain also exists featuring different vocal takes and lyrical variations, including the line "Don't get too close or else you might get shot." That version is documented separately within this archive.
