Overview

House Of Pain (Bad Boy Remix) was created during the production of The Notorious B.I.G.'s posthumous album Born Again. Rather than using the original 1993 mix, Bad Boy commissioned an entirely new production while retaining the original verses from The Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac and Stretch. A newly recorded chorus by Joe Hooker was also added, giving the song a more contemporary sound for the late 1990s.

The remix progressed far enough to appear on advance promotional versions of Born Again but was removed before the album's commercial release. As a result, it has never received an official public release and survives only from promotional sources that circulated among collectors.

For the Live Squad archive, the recording is significant because it preserves Stretch's original verse while presenting it in an entirely different musical setting. Although never officially released, it represents the first attempt to commercially revive the original 1993 collaboration before it was later reworked as Living In Pain in 2005.

Recording History

The original 1993 recording of House Of Pain was produced by Jesse West and featured The Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac and Stretch. During the production of Born Again in 1999, Bad Boy revisited the song, creating a completely new remix with updated production and a newly recorded chorus by Joe Hooker.

The remix was scheduled to appear on early promotional editions of Born Again, but was ultimately withdrawn before the album's final track listing was approved. It therefore remains one of the best-known unreleased Bad Boy remixes from the posthumous Biggie catalogue.

In 2005, the concept was revisited once again when the original verses were combined with new production, a chorus by Mary J. Blige and a guest verse from Nas to create Living In Pain for Duets: The Final Chapter.
